There are all sorts of fun art events going on this week. With outdoor art events in full swing, museums, and galleries starting their new season of summer shows, there is plenty to do in the city. Here are our suggestions what to do this week in art:
July 20th
Event: Art in General Annual Summer Benefit
Art in General will be celebrating 35 years with a new group show and Summer Benefit. The show, Memory Forms features numerous pieces of work by a large variety of artists that have been on view since the beginning of July, all of which will be available for purchase at the benefit. The benefit will feature cocktails, light fare, music, and discussion with the artists themselves.

Event: Words and Music with Patti Smith / Mariachi Flor de Toloache
Lincoln Center will be kicking off its Out of Doors season with famed writer/poet/musician, Patti Smith accompanied by the all-female Mariachi group Flor de Toloache. Smith will be embracing all of her mediums for the evening, performing her many talents with her infamous folksy-experimental vibe, the best part? It’s free!

Exhibition Opening: The Keeper

The New Museum will be opening their new Summer exhibition The Keeper, which focuses on the art of preserving objects and the psychology behind it. The exhibition will examine why people feel the need to save both sentimental and the apparently valueless pieces, with a variety of different artists’ studies and will emphasize the power of imagery and icons in a person’s life.

Up Late on the High Line
The High Line will be open late this week! New Yorkers will have the opportunity to enjoy the splendor of artistic performances set against the night sky. All along the High Line, a plethora of visual artists, musicians,and performance artists will be presenting their works to passing visitors.
July 23rd
LongHouse Summer Benefit
If you are in the Hamptons for the weekend, LongHouse will be hosting their annual Summer Benefit. The event will be packed with artists to hobnob with, dinner, cocktails, a silent auctions, and a surprise David Bowie tribute.
