The inaugural edition of Frieze Los Angeles is kicking off next week, February 15-17, and will bring together over 70 galleries across the city and the world to Paramount Studios for what is sure to be an exciting weekend. So what does one do in LA after a long day of fairs?

We turned to Marlies Verhoeven CEO and Co-Founder of The Cultivist, the members-only art club that helps people discover museums and galleries around the world, to get an insider’s perspective on what to do in LA during Frieze and what The Cultivist has up its sleeve.

Art Zealous: Ultimate LA outfit?

Marlies Verhoeven: I love LA because it’s a more casual version of NYC, so I typically opt for a pantsuit and sneakers.

AZ: When you travel to LA, you always bring?

MV: I’ve learned not to let those constantly sunny days fool you; a sweater or light jacket is a must, especially when I head to Malibu.

AZ: How would you describe LA’s art scene in 3 words?

MV: Greatest Art Ecospace

AZ: Favorite art institutions to visit while in LA?

MV: Ha, that’s like being asked about who’s your favorite child!  LACMA is always top of my list and I’m also looking forward to the Marciano Foundation as I’d like to see the Ai Weiwei show. The Mistake Room always has a surprise or two.

AZ: After a long day, what are your favorite spots in LA for dinner and drinks?

MV: I dream about the tagine at Bavel and a sneaky In-N-Out burger on the way to back to LAX.

AZ: Favorite hotel bar?

MV: Never a complete trip without a happy hour drink at Polo Lounge.

AZ: What are some of your favorite outdoor public artworks/sculptures throughout LA?

MV: Art Production Fund’s Champ by Zoe Buckman at the Standard, it’s just been extended for another year. And “Drone Mess Video” 2018 at Westfield Century City by Laurie Simmons.

The Cultivist is known for hosting exclusively dinners and studio visits. Pictured here: David Shillinglaw’s studio

AZ: Can you share some of The Cultivist’s plans for LA during Frieze?

MV: A studio visit with Theodora Allen, a private tour of Frieze and a dinner featuring local LA artists.
