2020 Color of the Year is Classic Blue (PANTONE 19-4052), and we’re here for it. But how do you use this lovely shade of blue in your home? Well, lucky for you, we tapped two Paintzen Certified Color Consultants Kristen Chuber and Meghan Stewart to give you some ideas!

Kristen Chuber’s tips:

Take Advantage of Small Spaces: Some people will tell you that you shouldn’t use dark colors in small rooms – but that is not true! Feel free to use a dark blue in a small room, especially a cozy bedroom or a dramatic powder room. Just be sure to create balance with lighter colored decor and furnishings. Adding mirrors also help make a room feel bigger!

Embrace the Accent Wall: As much as people say it’s “on the way out,” it’s a good way to start painting with dark colors without committing to a full room. It’s a fun way to be part of the Color of the Year trend without feeling the need to repaint every surface in a room.

Stick with High-Quality Paint: When painting with a deep color like navy or Classic Blue, you want to ensure you are using high-quality paint. High-quality paints will be more durable, meaning the richness of the blue will stay on the walls and will resist fading and scuffing. It will also go on more smoothly and be less streaky on your walls – nothing ruins a beautiful color like drips and streaks!

Meghan Stewart’s tips:

Consider the Lighting: Pair with cooler light bulbs to additionally expand the space. When toying between cool or warm lighting, always keep in mind that cooler bulbs are brighter and have a more modern feel, which tricks the eye into thinking the room is bigger than it is!

Utilize the Ceiling: Don’t forget about the 5th wall, the ceiling! Painting a darker color on the ceiling provides great depth and luxury to any space.

Get Creative: Think of ways to unexpectedly use this color if you’re not looking to fill the entire space with it – such as molding and doors!
