You might have heard by now that New York Media launched “My New York,” a year-long campaign of special events and activations celebrating the 50th anniversary of New York magazine. Kicking off the campaign is “50 New York Covers: A Public Art Project” which will feature specially-designed New York covers created by 50 renowned artists, all with their own New York story.
The covers will be publicly displayed in a variety of formats from wild postings to street lamp banners scattered throughout New York City. The covers will continue to roll out through October 2018. “50 New York Covers: A Public Art Project” culminates with a gallery exhibition of all 50 covers this fall.
The first covers unveiled were created by Mel Bochner, John Giorno, Alex Katz, Barbara Kruger, Marilyn Minter, Yoko Ono, Rob Pruitt, and Hank Willis Thomas. Additional covers will be unveiled throughout the year including Maurizio Cattelan, Kerry James Marshall, Rirkrit Tiravanjia, Will Cotton, and Nina Chanel Abney.
“For 50 years, no one has told New York’s stories like New York magazine,” said New York Media CEO Pam Wasserstein. “As we begin our year-long celebration of this milestone, we are excited to bring intimate performances, surprise appearances, headline shows, pop-ups, and curated public art to residents and all who visit the City.”
