Opening Reception for Art of the Everyday: Objects from Ancient Daily Life Exhibition
“The Art of the Everyday” exhibition focuses on the objects that were used in the lives of ordinary people in the ancient Mediterranean world, from Greece to Italy to Egypt and beyond. The artifacts in the exhibition were used in homes and sanctuaries as parts of social rituals, religious practice, and cultural interaction. Connecting our exploration of ancient artifacts to the technologies of today, the exhibition features examples of ancient artifacts that have been scanned and processed into 3D virtual models, and some 3D-printed samples.
This exhibition features ancient artifacts loaned to UM-Dearborn by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology (UM, Ann Arbor) and ancient glass vessels loaned by the Toledo Museum of Art. In addition, the exhibition will include modern studio glass and glass paperweights from the permanent collection of UM-Dearborn. Don Miller, flameworking expert and Lecturer IV in Biological Science at UM-Dearborn, has generously contributed a loan of glass making tools.
Under the guidance of faculty guest curator Prof. Diana Y. Ng, students in two art history classes taught over 2018-2019 were given the opportunity to handle ancient artifacts at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, researched and wrote content for the catalogue and web platforms, and prepared the gallery displays.
The Stamelos Gallery Center is very pleased to bring this exhibition of ancient artifacts from the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, the Toledo Museum of Art, and works from the University’s permanent collection to the UM-Dearborn campus community and the general public! The Art of the Everyday: Objects from Ancient Daily Life will be on view from April 26 to July 5, 2019.
The opening reception for the exhibition will take place on April 26, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and is free and open to the public.
