Opening of Jo Shane – DISCLAIMER, ON CANAL

DISCLAIMER is a new conceptual installation from artist Jo Shane that explores the tensions that arise from algorithms’ increasing role in our everyday lives. Presented by Wallplay ON CANAL, the show will be on view from Friday, April 12 through Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 322A Canal St.

DISCLAIMER will feature 48 photographs that depict a screenshot as found when spinning quickly between Instagram stories (a method that mimics a behavior known as “instapeeping”). Within an order prescribed by Instagram’s proprietary algorithm, Shane extracted adjacent posts from her personal feed that struck her as visually or contextually compelling. Now placed in dialog, the pairings elicit new threads of meaning, thus revealing our startling lack of control over our own story within this liminal digital space.

Displayed in the vernacular of the preexisting merch culture of Canal Street, all artworks in DISCLAIMER will take the form of for sale objects, or “units”. Each screenshot will be face mounted to plexiglas and installed on a mobile phone car holder. The unit price of $250 will be negotiable, furthering the project’s accessible and interactive format.
