Building Material at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles

Presented in conjunction with Pacific Standard Time, ‘Building Material’ examines specific trajectories in contemporary Brazilian art, tracing reactions against and continuations of the Neo-Concrete movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Taking as its point of departure the influential work of vanguard painter, photographer, and furniture designer Geraldo de Barros (1923 – 1998), the exhibition explores ways in which subsequent generations engaged geometric abstraction and reshaped the landscape of Brazilian contemporary art. De Barros provided a structure for radical exploration in the work of Ivens Machado, Paulo Monteiro, Nuno Ramos, and Celso Renato, and, subsequently, in the art of a younger generation of such figures as Rodrigo Cass, Lucas Simões, and Erika Verzutti.
