(1/28) Mosaic is Light: Work by Jeanne Reynal, 1940-1970, at Eric Firestone Gallery

Eric Firestone Gallery is proud to announce representation of the estate of Jeanne Reynal and a survey exhibition, Mosaic is Light: Work by Jeanne Reynal, 1940-1970, opening January 28 through April 10.

Jeanne Reynal (1903-1983) was a mosaicist and first-generation New York School artist. Challenging the expectations of the medium, she described her craft as a “contemporary and fresh look for this ancient medium.” Her work was largely abstract, dedicating ways in which applied tesserae (glass tiles, hand-cut stones and shells) in pigmented cement could reflect and create light across a surface. She elaborately reworked her surfaces by removing tesserae and re-applying thin layers, achieving a subtle, painterly affect.

On view will be work from the early 1940s through the 1970s, including works on loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art and and the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Sculpture Garden.
