In New York we are lucky enough to have tons of fantastic works of public art right on our doorstep, and the best part? They&#8217;re free! Here are our suggestions for the best public art exhibits you can&#8217;t miss this summer:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<header><\/header>\n<p><strong>Martin Puryear, Big Bling<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/160516_MSPC_MARTIN-PURYEAR_INSTALLED_YM_0022-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"160516_MSPC_MARTIN-PURYEAR_INSTALLED_YM_0022\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Photo\/\/Madison Square Park<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Madison Square Park is currently featuring a 40ft high golden earring\/roller-coaster\/elephant, created by renowned sculptor Martin Purer. The piece is the largest that Puryear has made to date\u00a0and is a mix of architectural experimentation and contemporary sculpture.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.madisonsquarepark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madison Square Park<\/a>,\u00a023rd to 26th St between Fifth and Madison Aves. Through January 8 2017.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"main_content\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7146\">\n<dt><strong>Barbara Kruger, Untitled (Blind Idealism Is\u2026)<\/strong><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/kruger-2-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"kruger-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Photo\/\/High Line Art<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The High Line, home to many public art exhibitions, is featuring the work of Barbara Kruger, known for her text-based pieces that critique culture and society. Kruger&#8217;s hand painted mural features the words\u00a0\u201cBLIND IDEALISM IS REACTIONARY SCARY DEADLY,\u201d a quote from\u00a0philosopher and revolutionary thinker Frantz Fanon. The quote with Kruger&#8217;s edits evokes the importance of our current political climate, and encourages one to think about the consequences of their individual actions.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/art.thehighline.org\/project\/barbarakruger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Line,<\/a> West 22rd and Tenth Avenue. Through March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><strong>\u00a0Nari Ward, Smart Tree<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7147\">\n<dt>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Photo\/\/High Line Art<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Further down the Highline, one can find the work of Nari Ward, a Jamaican sculptor known for constructing his works\u00a0from materials he finds in his own neighborhood. Inspired by a childhood memory of seeing a broken-down, abandoned car with a tree growing out of it, Ward created Smart Tree,\u00a0which features a &#8220;green&#8221; car cemented to ground, covered in treads from old tires, with a tree growing out of it.\u00a0The piece\u00a0is a commentary on\u00a0recycling and the overpowering ability that nature has to reclaim the environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/art.thehighline.org\/project\/nariward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Line<\/a>, West 23rd and Tenth Avenue. Through March 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isa Genzken, Two Orchids<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7148\">\n<dt>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/large-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"large-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Photo\/\/New York Public Art Fund<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Central Park is currently home to two 30ft high white orchids, courtesy of Isa Genzken and the Public Art Fund. The piece speaks to\u00a0the mass production of the white orchid. Once a rare and exotic flower, now in every home in America, and available for purchase at the nearest Target or Walmart.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicartfund.org\/view\/exhibitions\/6101_isa_genzken_two_orchids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Public Art Fund<\/a>, Doris C. Freedman Plaza,\u00a0Central Park. Through August 2016<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Martin Creed, Understanding<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7149\">\n<dt>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/large2-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"large2\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Photo\/\/New York Public Art Fund<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Martin Creed has created\u00a0one of his famous neon signs for the Brooklyn Bridge Park.\u00a0Understanding\u00a0rotates 360 degrees in front of the Manhattan skyline, to remind us all that understanding is the key to communication in society.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicartfund.org\/view\/exhibitions\/6103_martin_creed_understanding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Art Fund<\/a>, Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Through October 23.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Mika Tajima, Meridian (Gold)<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"zone large_list has-mobile-cta\">\n<article>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Tajima_L-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"Tajima_L\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mika Tajima has created a beautiful, multi-colored, water vaporous installation. Using the global gold economy in real-time, the color of the vapor changes in response to the commodity fluctuation. \u00a0Meridian (Gold)\u00a0is a living commentary on the way we perceive gold, examining how ones emotional relationship with something can be very different than its true worth.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sculpture-center.org\/exhibitionsExhibition.htm?id=113237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sculpture Center<\/a>, Hunter&#8217;s Point South Park, Queens.
