{"id":28159,"date":"2018-05-07T15:39:09","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T15:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/?p=28159"},"modified":"2018-05-07T15:39:09","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T15:39:09","slug":"creative-time-brings-down-the-walls-with-memorable-public-art-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artzealous.com\/creative-time-brings-down-the-walls-with-memorable-public-art-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Creative Time Brings Down The Walls With Memorable Public Art Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/creativetime.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creative Time<\/a>,\u00a0The Fortune Society, artist\u00a0Phil Collins, and over 100 collaborators hosted the first weekend of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/creativetime.org\/projects\/bring-down-the-walls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bring Down The Walls<\/em><\/a>, a public art project which turns an unconventional lens on the prison industrial complex through house music and educational programming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the day, visitors descended upon the Firehouse at 87 Lafayette St. for a school for radical thought, and enjoyed conversations that included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bazdreisinger\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baz Dreisinger<\/a>, author of\u00a0<em>Incarceration Nations: A Journey to Justice in Prisons Around the World<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenandprison.org\/social-justice\/pilar-maschi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pilar Maschi<\/a>, a formerly incarcerated, queer, anti-establishment abolitionist involved with Critical Resistance,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heatherannthompson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heather Ann Thompson<\/a>, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, known for her book\u00a0<em>Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy,\u00a0<\/em>and artist\u00a0Phil Collins, who hosted an album-listening party which features music created by formerly incarcerated individuals in collaboration with mainstream musicians.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-28163\" src=\"http:\/\/artzealous.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/SOS3702-e1525706546685.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once the sun went down, the Firehouse turned into a dance party with\u00a0Brooklyn\u2019s\u00a0Soul Summit, and a special performance by DJ Kim Lightfoot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you missed last weekend&#8217;s festivities,\u00a0<em>Bring Down The Walls<\/em>,\u00a0will focus on dismantling the prison industrial complex, with discussions on the economics of bail, the War on Drugs, and the challenges of parole and probation.
