Opening Reception on Sept. 22 @ Art Works, Richmond, VA

Art Works presents Salvadoran-Scottish-American visual artist Christine Stoddard’s first Richmond, Virginia solo art show, Yo Soy Mujer. The show opens with a public reception in the art center’s Skylight Gallery on September 22 at 7 p.m. and runs through October 22.

Yo Soy Mujer explores the energetic nature of feminine power through digital photo illustrations. As the daughter of a Salvadoran mother and a New Yorker father, Ms. Stoddard’s photography channels the multicultural experiences of her childhood in Arlington, Virginia, her world travels as a young adult, and her current life in New York City. She layers photos of diverse female subjects with photos of textures from both their everyday lives and their imaginary ones. The final photo collages give voice to universal female experiences.

Ms. Stoddard returns to Richmond as a 2012 graduate of VCUarts with national honors and exhibitions to her name. As one of Style Weekly’s 2011 “Top 40 Under 40 in Richmond,” Ms. Stoddard considers her time in Richmond essential to her current art practice. It was there that she established Quail Bell Magazine, an art and literary magazine that has been recognized by outlets like Time Out New York and Washington Post Express, and won a national emerging artist award from the Puffin Foundation. Beyond Richmond, Ms. Stoddard’s works have appeared in the New York Transit Museum, the Condé Nast Building at Times Square, the Ground Zero Hurricane Katrina Museum, George Washington University’s Gallery 102, and other venues.
