Watermelon Mélange

Downtown wunderkinds Mason Roberts and Stirling Caiulo are pleased to announce their latest collaboration Watermelon Mélange. A conceptual blend of art and music, the innovative pop-up exhibition will showcase a fusion of Roberts’ imaginative figurative works and Caiulo’s melodic hip-hop mash-ups. The exhibition will be on view at 21 Ludlow Street on October 6, 2018, from 7:30 to 10pm, and October 7, from 10am to 5pm.

Occupying the borderlands between reality and fantasy, Roberts’ mixed media drawings, paintings, and murals are impulsively created, manifest of the instinctual hand of a talented draftsman grappling with what is directly in front of him. An amalgam of the representational and the fantastical, Roberts’ evocative female portraits suggest a sense of intimacy between the artist and the work he creates. The confident lines, decorative aesthetics, and preoccupation with details, at once recognizably real yet heavily stylized, displaying both sheer physicality and pure sensuality.

Exploring the dynamic and profound influence music has upon a viewer’s experience of art, Stirling’s lo-fi, atmospheric hip hop will concurrently complement the works on view. Based upon fragmented memories, the recording artist and producer’s cryptic, dreamlike nostalgia results in intimate, enigmatic tracks of languorous beauty and mystery. Like a lambent light in the distance, Stirling creates a distinctive mood, inducing in the listener a sense of slow-building ennui, the plaintive melancholia one might feel on a lonely, night time drive.
