"Forward Together" by Susan Grabel at Ceres Gallery

Ceres Gallery is pleased to present Susan Grabel’s recent work, Forward Together, new digital fabrications in wood and steel.
Grabel is a figurative sculptor and printmaker. Her work deals with the human dimensions of social issues. Forward Together reflects her vision that the only way for civilization to survive is for people to embrace their shared humanity and move forward together. Grabel visually constructs a metaphor for this path enhanced by the colors, forms and rhythms of the positive and negative spaces.

Susan Grabel has been utilizing the new technology and expertise at the Staten Island Makerspace to translate her work into large scale pieces in wood and steel using a laser cutter and CNC router. The digital fabrications displayed in this show are a further iteration in content and process of her prior work on Confluence: The Way Forward.

Grabel’s work has been exhibited in solo and group shows at galleries, universities and museums across the country including Ceres Gallery, NYC; Denise Bibro Gallery, NYC; Hebrew Union College, NYC; Wagner College, SI, NY; Long Island University, B’klyn, NY; Georgia College Museum, Milledgeville, GA; Monmouth Museum, NJ; Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, MI. In 2012, her retrospective, Constructions of Conscience: The Social Art of Susan Grabel, was presented at the Staten Island Museum, SI, NY. She was included in such important surveys of sculpture as In Three Dimension: Women Sculptors of the ‘90’s curated by Charlotte Streifer Rubinstein, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, SI, NY, 1995 and Sculpture of the 70’s: the Figure, Pratt Manhattan Center, NYC, 1981.
