Escape Velocity

signs and symbols presents Escape Velocity, an immersive performance work-shop with film, video, sound and dance by artist Jen DeNike as part of artists & allies.

Escape Velocity will serve as an invocation for a new series of ballet works beginning September 5th at signs and symbols which will culminate in a solo project by Jen DeNike February 2019. A call and response inspired by her Scrying Ballet and film Another Circle from (2010). This live work-shop starts by considering the choreography of an infinite pirouette in opposition to the movement of bodies in space with sight or lack of sight. The performance will investigate ideas of perception; a blind person lacking external reference points walks in circular loops all the while believing they are walking in straight lines.

Jen DeNike is an artist who works with film/video, photography, performance and collage. Recent exhibitions include: Participant Inc, Julia Stoschek Collection, AE2 Los Angeles, Miami Art Basel Film Program, Schauspiel Köln Opera house, Faena Forum, Franklin Street Works, Bombay Beach Biennale. She directed Scrying: a Ballet in 3 Acts which premiered at PopRally The Museum of Modern Art (2010). She has two forthcoming solo exhibitions in 2019; at signs and symbols, NYC and Central Fine Miami.
