“Control Room” from the Bedroom as Canvas Series
In her first solo show, Schuyler Hazard presents Control Room; a fully immersive, manic-episode experience. Seeking to inspire discourse surrounding the severity, impact, and prevalence of Manic Depression, Hazard urges viewers to consider the sense of terror that accompanies a total lack of control over one’s own moods, as well as to identify the neurotypical model of emotional stability as a fundamental privilege that many individuals lack. Hazard seeks tooffer the accuracy and candor that most of the popular representations of her disorder lack, citing works such as Homeland, Shameless, and Silver Lining’s Playbook as examples of the reductive and largely speculative portrayal of Manic Depression in mainstream media. With six paintings, a gravel of psychiatric medications and placebos, a sound piece, and a constricting room, viewers will feel the delusions, experience the hallucinations, and learn to fear the lack of control that imbues, with disturbing irony, the whole of Control Room.
