Ajay Kurian “The Dreamers” at 47 Canal

The Dreamers presents a new body of works by Ajay Kurian, concluding a series of
interconnected solo exhibitions:
Work Harder Underwater – Rowhouse Project, Baltimore, September 2015
Unilateral Educational Disarmament – JOAN, Los Angeles, February 2016
The Childhood of Jesus – White Flag Projects, St. Louis, March 2016
Inside Out – Art Basel Statements – Basel, Switzerland, June 2016

Over the past year this series of exhibitions built on one another. Though technically discrete, within each project are traces of previous ones, occasionally borrowed blue prints, and escaped ideas. They are united by the social and emotional worlds of children, which is of course in part the world that we and those before us have handed them. That means that there is wonder, strangeness, and excitement, as well as trauma and “innovations” in ways to hate, ways to hurt, ways to digest history and division. With this exhibition, we can add one final thing to that list of innovations: ways to dream amidst all this.
