“Africa Salon: Disguise” at the Brooklyn Museum

Immerse yourself in our exhibition Disguise: Masks and Global African Art when AFRICA SALON, Yale University’s contemporary African arts and culture festival, takes over the Museum. Explore masquerade through performances, talks, and workshops led by internationally known artists and gain new understandings of African, American, and other identities.

Go behind the scenes in Diguise, with Kevin Dumouchelle, Associate Curator, Arts of Africa and the Pacific Islands.

1–1:20 p.m. | Performance | Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing, 5th Floor
Laara Garcia performs a ritual dance she choreographed, activating Saya Woolfalk’s installation ChimaTEK: Virtual Chimeric Space.

1:15–2:15 p.m. | Digital Culture Chat | Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
A panel discussion about “digital museums” and African art and culture. With Jonathan Jackson, co-founder of Blavity; Eyitemi Pop, editor-in-chief of Ayiba magazine; and Omar Dubois, editor-in-chief of True Africa. Watch this event on Livestream.

2:30–3 p.m. | Film | Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
A screening of the Afro-magical realist Diasporadical Trilogia, by rapper Blitz the Ambassador, followed by a talkback with the artist.

3–4 p.m. | Performance and Talkback | East Gallery, 1st Floor
Dancer and choreographer Djassi Dacosta Johnson presents Brendan Fernandes’s In Touch, which uses gesture to question how we interact with African art. After, the two artists join in conversation about performance art in museums; moderated by Amanda Jane Graham.

3:15–4 p.m. | Mask-Making Workshop | Elizabeth A. Sackler Centerfor Feminist Art, Forum, 4th Floor
Led by the Iyapo Repository, a library of digital and physical artifacts that affirm peoples of African descent.

4–4:30 p.m. | Poetry Salon | Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
Safia Elhillo performs poetry, with soundscapes and visuals by performance collective BKLYN ZULU. Watch this event on Livestream.

4:30–6 p.m. | Disguise Dance Party | Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor
Presented by NON Records, a collective of artists from the African diaspora. Dress code: “African cool”
