June Glasson – New Work

Opening Reception: September 16, 2017, 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Kenise Barnes Fine Art is pleased to open the fall exhibition season with a solo show featuring new paintings by Wyoming based multidisciplinary artist June Glasson. Six new mixed media paintings on paper will be featured in the show, Glasson’s second exhibition with the gallery.

The “American West” is the primary focus and artistic catalyst for June Glasson. Glasson explores and questions iconic “western” imagery. From the artist’s statement: “Simultaneously, the work reflects my personal relationship with the landscape, the people, and culture of Wyoming – a place that is both exotic and home to me.”

This exhibition focuses on gouache, ink and graphite portraits of women inventively costumed and juxtaposed with beaver pelts, pistols and other icons of the wild west. In this series the artist sets up a visual investigation into dominant narratives about the region whose romanticized legends often ignore its complicated and violent history. Glasson’s figurative work depicts semi-realistic representations of the women in her life. Her highly personalized methodologies express concern for the treatment of the female figure in art and popular culture while challenging historic and contemporary notions of gender roles.

Glasson’s paintings have been exhibited in London, Berlin and in museums and galleries throughout the United States. Glasson’s work has been published in New American Paintings, The Paris Review, The Wall Street Journal, Guernica, Domino, Myself, Asymptote, People and Diner Journal, to name a few.

Please contact the gallery for images and additional information or to arrange a preview of the exhibition.
