Arshile Gorky: Ardent Nature 1942 – 1946 at Hauser & Wirth
‘Arshile Gorky. Ardent Nature 1942 – 1946’ will be Hauser & Wirth’s inaugural presentation of work by a seminal figure in the shift to abstraction that defined American art during the first half of the twentieth century. In the early 1940s, Gorky turned to nature as his primary subject matter, inspired by vacations in Connecticut and rural Virginia. Filled with organic forms and infused with an explosive expressive freedom, the resulting works from this period are among the most evocative works of the artist’s career. Curated by Saskia Spender, ‘Arshile Gorky. Ardent Nature 1942 – 1946’ features over fifty landscapes, including paintings and works on paper, from a critical moment in the artist’s life and work.
